HTI’s mission is to expand patient access to high quality cancer technologies and services. Where as this is most often accomplished through the local development of appropriate cancer services it is sometimes necessary to refer certain types of cancer care to providers outside of the local service area. This is often true for rare tumor types but can also be true for high technology services such as proton therapy. Some countries such as the UK refer all proton patients to proton centres outside of the country.

HTI provides clinical pathway and logistic services to assist consultants and patients who seek access to proton therapy. HTI will assist a consultant or patient in how best to access the existing national system of patient referral or assist a private patient who is looking for how best to obtain a proton therapy referral. HTI has existing referral arrangements with multiple proton centres and will match a patients needs with the expertise and availability of treatment slots within this network of proton centres. HTI’s patient service coordinator will help coordinate the flow of clinical information between the patients referring consultant and the proton therapy oncologist. HTI will work with a patients current oncology team to ensure that fragmentation of care is minimized.

Once a decision has been made that proton therapy offers the best chance for a positive treatment outcome, HTI will coordinate international travel, local accommodation, and local travel for the duration of the course of treatment.
